Transportation Coordination Effort Kicks Off July 20th

Helping to improve community transportation in 13 towns of the Contoocook Valley.

PETERBOROUGH, NH - July 7, 2009 - Contoocook Valley Transportation Company (CVTC), a nonprofit transportation organization serving local communities, is proud to participate in statewide and regional transportation coordination efforts and will be joining other stakeholders at the kick-off meeting on Monday, July 20th of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) for the Contoocook Valley. The meeting will be held at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, NH.

This RCC meeting, hosted by the Southwest Region Planning Commission (SWRPC), is designed for those who have a stake in transportation: Interest groups for seniors and people with disabilities, transportation providers, social service agencies, businesses, elected officials, town representatives, health-care providers, schools, and places of worship. For more information, please call J.B. Mack at SWRPC at 603-357-0557.

A community needs-assessment survey conducted several years ago ranked transportation needs as second (after affordable housing), which led to a grassroots effort in the eastern Monadnock region (Antrim, Bennington, Dublin, Francestown, Greenfield, Greenville, Hancock, Jaffrey, New Ipswich, Peterborough, Rindge, Sharon, and Temple) to work on ways to make better use of existing transportation r esources. This effort led to creative new transportation options that serve as the foundation of CVTC.

Currently CVTC maintains a Rideboard on its website (www.cvtc-nh.org) for people willing to share a ride to a common destination. CVTC also works with the Red Cross to provide volunteer drivers for persons who are unable to drive themselves to appointments, shopping, and other necessary destinations. Volunteer drivers are welcome: Anyone with a bit of time now and then and an interest in participating in this effort may call CVTC toll-free at 1-877-428-2882.

CVTC recently participated in the region-wide Summit On Community Transportation Development in the Contoocook Valley, which was held at the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield, NH, on June 10th. The Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) was created at his summit at which providers and users of community transportation services, community and government leaders, social services representatives, state and federal policymakers, and private foundation officers addressed the pressing transportation needs in this region.

CVTC, whose mission is creating, coordinating and delivering transportation solutions for the Monadnock region, receives funding from the NH Endowment for Health, the Federal Transit Administration New Freedom Program and Job Access Reverse Commute Program, the Monadnock Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and the A. Erland and Hazel N. Goyette Fund.
