Last year saw the largest increase in volunteers in six years, according to the Corporation for National and Community service. “Americans have responded to tough economic times by volunteering in big numbers,” said Patrick Corvington, the Corporation’s CEO.
We have seen this at CVTC. Our volunteers have doubled since last summer. We applaud the generosity of spirit that makes someone give their time to others who need their help.
In today’s economy, those among us who can’t drive or who have no car are put at a special disadvantage. According to a recent US Consumer Expenditure Survey, the poorest fifth of the US population spends almost a third of its budget on transportation.
That’s why CVTC is working to create an integrated transportation system for the Eastern Monadnock and beyond, with two options available now. Our Volunteer Driver Program that gets people to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other needed destinations. The CVTC Rideshare Program, serving the entire Monadnock Region, helps people form carpools to work, errands, and events like concerts and ball games. Carpools are a great way to make getting to work more affordable, with the added benefit of cutting down on pollution.
CVTC recently received $140,000 in federal funding, and we’re working to create a sustainable local match for that funding. Just as you would diversify your retirement investments, we want to spread out our support among multiple sources such as corporate sponsors, foundation grants, individual donors, and town support, so that we do not become overly dependent on any single source.
Why support CVTC?
- Transportation is the greatest need in the Monadnock region after affordable housing (Monadnock United Way 2007).
- CVTC was formed in response to surveys held in the 13 towns of the Eastern Monadnock Region.
- Residents need rides to medical appointments, employment, shopping, cultural events, social visits and after school activities.
- CVTC is working with the Red Cross and other agencies to establish coordinated transportation in the Monadnock Region that is sustainable and affordable.
- The CVTC Volunteer Driver Program serves Antrim, Bennington, Dublin, Francestown, Greenfield, Greenville, Hancock, Jaffrey, New Ipswich, Peterborough, Rindge, Sharon, and Temple.
- CVTC volunteers give rides Monday through Friday, nine to five, and beyond when resources permit.
- CVTC volunteers give rides within the Monadnock Region and to locations such as Lebanon, Nashua, Manchester, Concord, and sometimes Boston.
- The CVTC Rideshare Program is providing solutions such as carpooling to help people traveling through and within the Monadnock Region find a more affordable way to get to work, errands and events.
- CVTC is developing a Shuttle Program to take residents of the Eastern Monadnock Region to shopping and community suppers on a regular basis.
- CVTC has funding from the Federal Transit Administration, and is looking for a sustainable local match for that funding so that we can continue to provide rides and help people get where they need to go.
- CVTC will be asking towns for a small contribution during the next budget cycle, and we hope that you will show your support in deliberative sessions and town meetings across the Eastern Monadnock Region.
- Please help us get your neighbors where they need to go. There are many ways you can make a difference. Volunteer a few hours a month. Make a contribution.. Support us at your town meeting. Give me a call if you have questions: 1-877-428-2882 x 3.
With gratitude,
